Japan Initiation of an Anti-Dumping Duty Investigation of Graphite Electrodes Originating in the People’s Republic of China

On February 26, 2024, Japan Minister of Finance received an application to impose an anti-dumping duty on graphite electrodes* originating in the People’s Republic of China**, from SEC Carbon Ltd., Tokai Carbon, Co., Ltd., and Nippon Carbon Co., Ltd. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) examined the application in accordance with the WTO Agreements and related domestic laws and regulations. The examination showed that the application had sufficient evidence to justify the initiation of an investigation. Therefore, the ministries have decided to initiate a joint investigation (Public Notice on April 24, 2024).

Precautions when using graphite electrodes

When loading materials into the furnace, in order to reduce the impact on the electrodes from material collapse, large chunks of material should be placed near the bottom of the furnace. Also, avoid the accumulation of non-conductive objects such as lime directly below the electrodes, as it may affect electrical conductivity or cause electrode breakage.
